Thursday morning, November 2nd was the day that a record 157 College Republicans were scheduled to make the trek to San Diego for CCR’s annual GOTV weekend. That morning, plans changed drastically.
When new poll numbers were released that indicated Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia’s reelection was in peril, CCR worked with the Assembly Republican Caucus to organize another massive precinct walking operation in Palm Springs—redirecting 66 of its members scheduled to travel down to San Diego to the remote desert town of Indio.
CCR made the difference and was able to turn out more volunteers to this crucial campaign than any other grassroots organization in the state. Throughout the weekend, CRs walked to 7550 houses and contacted approximately 9,000 voters. The result—a razor thin victory of 2% (1,135 votes).
The College Republicans were joined by Senator Jim Battin, Assembly Leader George Plescia and Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia, all of whom expressed their sincere appreciation to the CRs who worked all weekend.
Although stretched thin across the state, CCR also produced 93 volunteers to walk precincts for Assemblywoman Shirley Horton and Republican statewide candidates. Throughout the weekend, College Republicans contacted 11,533 voters and helped Shirley Horton achieve yet another slim victory of 5,135 votes (5.4%).
The College Republicans in San Diego were joined by incoming Assemblymen Joel Anderson and Martin Garrick as well as Shirley Horton.
