BERKELEY, CA— Earlier today, the California College Republicans mailed a total of 30 letters to every University of California and California State University regent, chancellor and president, demanding they sign the petition to recall Governor Gray Davis. “These educational leaders should sign this petition as a message that they put students first,” said Michael Davidson, Chairman of the California College Republicans. “No one has done more to cripple California’s higher education system with fee increases and funding cuts than Gray Davis.” Davis’ poor leadership during his term of office has led to a $38 billion dollar budget crisis, resulting in fee increases and service cuts for California’s college students – in addition to forcing many students out of the classroom. Governor Davis has proposed cutting funding to higher education programs by $102.7 million, while simultaneously increasing fees to attend public universities. Davis’ mid-year reductions alone have cut funding to community colleges by $215 million. Experts believe this will result in over 200,000 students withdrawing from California’s community colleges. Recently, UC President Atkinson proposed a 30% tuition hike, on top of a 10% hike approved last spring. A copy of the letter mailed to the regents, chancellors and presidents follows this press release. Recall petitions were included with the letters.
