ImageWhile most Republican delegates were rousing themselves from a long night of partying, Madison Square Garden was taken over Wednesday morning by a “Youth Convention." We found Michael Davidson, the 24-year-old state chairman of the California College Republicans, on the convention floor hawking copies of his polical zine Moxie. So how does a kid from Berkeley get involved in Republican politics when most of his classmates were probably out protesting? Davidson racks it up to a trip that he took to the Soviet Union, during which a Russian approached his translator and asked if Davidson was an American because “he walks like he's free”. “That's when I started to get intrigued by the ideas of America,” said Davidson. “When I was in high school, I started getting into it more intellectually. But it wasn't until the 2000 election, especially at Berkeley, that I got philosophically involved with the Republican Party.”

At Berkeley, Davidson felt like a fish out of water. “I felt like I was behind enemy lines. I often got spat at. I'm not a very in-your-face kinda guy, but you know, I got flipped off, I got death threats, and that stuff's troubling. But what's most disappointing, though, is when you see students that are conservative and they're afraid to talk about it because they don't want to lose friends, they don't want to get hurt. That's why it's important that we organize and get together as a group.”

As Jenna and Barbara Bush took the stage and the conventioneers roared out their approval, Davidson expressed excitement at the very un-Berkeley-like kids in the convention hall. “It just goes to show how enthusiastic the young people are about the president and about this party.” Especially the first twins. “They're hot. They're stylish, their cute, they're intelligent, you know - they went to [the University of Texas] and Yale.”

Minutes later, Davidson must have experienced a blast from his Berkeley past as a group of ten protesters sitting in the crowd blew whistles and began to chant, "Bush kills." After some scuffling, they were quickly removed by security officers.
